As I mentioned in the activity stream post, there are going to be a number of issues porting Civatar as it stands going to the new server, and it still isn’t possible to stay on this one much longer.
Essentially there are database issues I have to clean up – it isn’t just the size that is the problem, I got around that, it’s that there are data errors in the current database that need cleaning up.
There are plugins that have to be updated to work with PHP 8.2
And there are some that are not working properly even here, the user block and moderation plugins for example have problems.
I guess one question that comes to mind to me anyway is would we be better off trying something else? I’m really not happy with the way buddy press works, the only good part to me is the fact we can all have our own sites, but the activity stream is wonky even with those.
Is anybody up for trying something different, and by “trying” I mean I load the software on the new server under a different domain name so we can use it while Civatar is still operational here.
I can link a page of all the current self hosted social software packages if you want to take a look at them.
Other than that, I am going to take the next week trying to fix the issues here so it (hopefully) can be ported. I am less optimistic about that than I was before. Plan “B” of course was to change the Domain so it pointed back to the old server. We are there.
Is there a social network that you want to transfer to?
As far as ones I use, I’m on Mastadon as Flagons Workshop, haven’t done much with it. On Patreon, same there. There’s a lot of places I need to spend time with the comics, but I haven’t really been consistently updating that site either.

My main interest in Word Press is being able to make the sites and decorate, and work with coding, but I have sadly neglected it lately. I am just too busy with interactions to play around with it. I would hate to lose it though.
If you want to go to a website that supports Freedom of Speech, there is MEWE. I have an account there. They have groups and pages, if you want to go this route.
I’ll take a look at that one, I hadn’t heard of it before. My only reason for bringing the subject up is that BuddyPress does not seem to work all that well, and I was just wondering if we would be happier looking at alternatives. I have no problem hosting a site.

You could be a Mastadon host! I sorta thought about doing that, but was afraid I would run into things i couldn’t handle.

I’ll go look for some, but thinking about it, really the weak point of this site is Buddypress and everything we’ve had to add to get that activity stream half way working. We really don’t need it, everybody can have their home sites without it, and they can make announcements of new postings in the Forum which we aren’t using simply because it essentially duplicates the activity stream.
I can certainly make a page for navigation to the personal sites without buddypress, the only thing is it would have to be manually updated, and there might be a plugin to do that.
Groups we’ve never used, there aren’t enough of us here for them.
Sounds like a plan. The activity page is both a blessing and a curse. It’s nice to see when new blogs are written, but when a bunch of other stuff is added, it drives everything down and off the page, including this blog which all the members need to see and put in their two cents worth.
Let us know if you need/find any plugins to help things work here and what you will need for the cost of them. You shouldn’t have to do and pay for everything.

Brian, I’m not on here much because of a daily grind however, I would be happy with a simple site. At this point and time, decorating pages here isn’t simple and the pages can’t be themed like Shmoo and Multiply once were. I’m easy to please and just being in touch makes me happy. I have pages on other sites, such as MeWe.com, and they are a big flop unless you are into political bashing, etc. That’s my input for now.
