I never saw an onion in a bag until after I became an adult and left home to live in the big city! Growing up on a farm far from rural life and having very little income, meant that if we didn’t grow it…we didn’t eat it!
Onions are very easy to grow, and with a little planning and the right varieties, one can have them year round…green throughout the summer and large bulbs for winter use and cooking.
I mostly grow my onions from sets, but occasionally buy plants, especially when I want a sweet onion. They don’t do well this far north though, and most years I am disappointed with the yield.
My favorite variety is “Stuttgarter”, a little pricey, but well worth the extra expense. They are an excellent keeper, (I still have some small ones from last years harvest),and rarely ever make seed. (Maybe one out of 50 or so, will bloom.) The more common types bloom quite frequently, (which means you won’t get a large bulb from that onion.)
I plant my sets around the tenth of April, and harvest the bulbs in late summer, (enjoying them green as scallions in the meantime.)
More pictures to be added in a bit…
This is great, Vero! Thank you for sharing this info. I’m going to look up this variety next yr. I’m growing Candy hybrid and bunching onions – I think welch something 😂 The red onion seed – cabarnet, did not germinate. Interesting about less expensive sets making seeds. So much to learn about onions 🧅 Here’s to a great onion season 😉
Sorry to take so long to answer you Neetu. Notifications don’t work too well here and I didn’t even get one. Jill and I have learned to just answer whenever we happen to see the post. It gives us something to look for and keeps us on our toes! lol The candy hybrid sounds like it might be a sweet onion?
Hey Vero! I’m trying to get the hang of this place. I finally figured out where to go to look for the comments 😂 Definitely no apologies needed on your part! I believe it is a sweet onion. I picked up the seeds on a whim at Walmart (I think) a few days after I realized the seeds for red weren’t going to work & this was the only one on the shelf😂🤷🏽♀️it’ll have to do. I’ve learnt onion seeds need to be as fresh as the morning sun or they won’t germinate. Let’s see what happens with these. Fingers crossed I get a few 🧅 😂
I need to clear up a sentence. By “bag” I meant the bags that onions are in when sold in stores…not “grow bags”.
Knew what you meant😊
Good!!!
Thank you for the info, I’ve never tried onions, but will try to find some onion plants. Ah you inspire once again, you’re a Garden Super Hero!! Amazing you still have some of last year’s crop!
Find the Stuttgarters if you can. They make mature onions just as quickly as the plants do.
Yes they are the best keeping onion I have found. The taller onions in the second picture are Dutch Onions.(Also known as Egyptian Walking Onions.) They are extremely hardy and grow all winter. They never make large bulbs…just clusters of small ones.
📝Got it🙏🌱🧅
