This texture increases the nose’s surface area to trap the scent molecules. A smooth nose wouldn’t be as effective at picking up the scents because they would just slide off. Basically, a ridged nose traps the molecules, and gives the deer more time to evaluate what they are smelling. Compared to a human, a deer’s sense of smell is about 500 to 1,000 times more powerful.
