Kamahl talked about being the first to record the song in an appearance on Australian TV show\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spicks_and_Specks_(TV_series)\">Spicks and Specks<\/a><\/em>\u00a0but stated it was not commercially released because it was felt he did not suit the country and western style. Instead,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roger_Whittaker\">Roger Whittaker<\/a>\u00a0recorded the song, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sheena_Easton\">Sheena Easton<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lee_Greenwood\">Lee Greenwood<\/a>. The song appeared shortly thereafter in charted versions by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colleen_Hewett\">Colleen Hewett<\/a>\u00a0(1982),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lou_Rawls\">Lou Rawls<\/a>\u00a0(1983),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gladys_Knight_&amp;_the_Pips\">Gladys Knight &amp; the Pips<\/a>\u00a0(1983) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gary_Morris\">Gary Morris<\/a>\u00a0(1983).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" id=\"mwHQ\"><strong>The highest-charting version of the song to date was recorded in 1988 by singer and actress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bette_Midler\">Bette Midler<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beaches_(soundtrack)\">soundtrack<\/a>\u00a0to the film\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beaches_(1988_film)\">Beaches<\/a><\/em>. This version was released as a single in early 1989, spent one week at\u00a0No.\u00a01 on the US\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_Hot_100\"><em>Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Hot 100<\/a>\u00a0singles chart in June 1989, and won\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award\">Grammy Awards<\/a>\u00a0for both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award_for_Record_of_the_Year\">Record of the Year<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award_for_Song_of_the_Year\">Song of the Year<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/32nd_Annual_Grammy_Awards\">32nd Annual Grammy Awards<\/a>\u00a0in February 1990. On October 24, 1991, Midler&#8217;s single was also certified\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RIAA_certification\">Platinum<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recording_Industry_Association_of_America\">Recording Industry Association of America<\/a>\u00a0for shipment of one million copies in the United States.
