It first appeared on his fourth album,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tea_for_the_Tillerman\">Tea for the Tillerman<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1970). Released as a single in September 1970 by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Island_Records\">Island Records<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A&amp;M_Records\">A&amp;M Records<\/a>, &#8220;Wild World&#8221; saw significant commercial success, garnering attention for its themes of love and heartbreak, and has been covered numerous times since its release.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maxi_Priest\">Maxi Priest<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mr._Big_(American_band)\">Mr. Big<\/a>\u00a0(released in 1988 and 1993 respectively) had successful cover versions of the song.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" id=\"mwFw\"><strong>Stevens developed a relationship with actress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patti_D'Arbanville\">Patti D&#8217;Arbanville<\/a>\u00a0and the two were a pair for roughly two years. Many have speculated that this song was based on or inspired in part by this relationship. Stevens denied this when speaking on The Chris Isaak Hour in 2009, explaining that the song was his own reflection to returning to music after a near-death experience due to complications with tuberculosis.
