Since 1987, by an act of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Congress\">U.S. Congress<\/a>, it is the official National March of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_of_America\">United States of America<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"History\">History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" id=\"mwGQ\"><strong>In his 1928 autobiography,\u00a0<em>Marching Along<\/em>, Sousa wrote that he composed the march on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christmas\">Christmas Day<\/a>, 1896. Sousa was on board White Star Line&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RMS_Teutonic\">Teutonic<\/a>\u00a0on his way home from a vacation with his wife in Europe and had just learned of the recent death of David Blakely, the manager of the Sousa Band\u00a0.
