It was released in August 1983 as the first single from Rogers&#8217;s fifteenth studio album\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eyes_That_See_in_the_Dark\">Eyes That See in the Dark<\/a><\/em>. The Bee Gees released a live version in 1998 and a studio version in 2001.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The song reached number one on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_Hot_100\"><em>Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Hot 100<\/a>\u00a0chart in the United States, giving each of Rogers and Parton their second pop number-one hit (after Rogers&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lady_(Kenny_Rogers_song)\">Lady<\/a>&#8221; in 1980 and Parton&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/9_to_5_(Dolly_Parton_song)\">9 to 5<\/a>&#8221; in 1981). It also topped the Country and Adult Contemporary charts. In 2005 the song topped\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Country_Music_Television\">Country Music Television<\/a>&#8216;s poll of the best country duets of all time; Parton and Rogers reunited to perform the song on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CMT_(American_TV_channel)\">CMT<\/a>\u00a0special. As of May 2023, it has been triple\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Platinum_certification\">certified Platinum<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recording_Industry_Association_of_America\">Recording Industry Association of America<\/a>\u00a0for three million certified units.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Named after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islands_in_the_Stream_(novel)\">the 1970 novel<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ernest_Hemingway\">Ernest Hemingway<\/a>, the song was originally written for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diana_Ross\">Diana Ross<\/a>\u00a0in an R&amp;B style but later reworked for the duet by Rogers and Parton.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>It has been claimed that the song was also intended for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marvin_Gaye\">Marvin Gaye<\/a>. This is attributed to a 2001\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Good_Morning_America\">Good Morning America<\/a><\/em>\u00a0interview with the Bee Gees. When Barry Gibb said the song was written for Ross, Robin Gibb interrupted and said, &#8220;No, we wrote it for Marvin Gaye &#8230; We sent it to him but he was dead so it was a bit difficult for him to sing it.&#8221;\u00a0 Gaye actually died in 1984, a year after the recording. \u00a0Separately, Robin Gibb has said the song was stylistically written &#8220;&#8230; as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motown\">Tamla<\/a>\u00a0kind of soul song in a Marvin Gaye type feel&#8221;, though not asserting it was for Gaye.\u00a0 In other interviews, Barry Gibb has always maintained that Ross was the original artist for the song with no mention of Gaye.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>For licensing reasons, the song was not included on the digital release of\u00a0<em>Eyes That See in the Dark<\/em>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capitol_Records_Nashville\">Capitol Records Nashville<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sony_Music\">Sony Music<\/a>, the current owner of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RCA_Records\">RCA Records<\/a>, protected copyrights in the recording, which is digitally available only in various compilations from Sony Music, especially those of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dolly_Parton\">Dolly Parton<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>. . . &#8220;Islands in the Stream&#8221; is a song written by the\u00a0Bee Gees\u00a0and recorded by American\u00a0country music\u00a0artists\u00a0Kenny Rogers\u00a0and\u00a0Dolly Parton.
