The album was released on January 26, 1970, through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbia_Records\">Columbia Records<\/a>. Their\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parsley,_Sage,_Rosemary_and_Thyme\">Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme<\/a><\/em>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Graduate_(soundtrack)\">soundtrack album<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_Nichols\">Mike Nichols<\/a>&#8216; film\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Graduate\">The Graduate<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bookends_(album)\">Bookends<\/a><\/em>\u00a0peaked at number four, one, and one in the US\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_200\"><em>Billboard<\/em>\u00a0200<\/a>, respectively, with the former selling 3 million copies and the latter two selling 2 million copies each in the United States. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_Garfunkel\">Art Garfunkel<\/a>\u00a0took the role of Captain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nately\">Nately<\/a>\u00a0in another Nichols film,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catch-22_(film)\">Catch-22<\/a><\/em>, based on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catch-22\">novel of the same name<\/a>. Initially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Simon\">Paul Simon<\/a>\u00a0was to play the character of Dunbar, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Screenwriter\">screenwriter<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buck_Henry\">Buck Henry<\/a> felt the film was already crowded with characters and subsequently wrote Simon&#8217;s part out.\u00a0 The unexpectedly long film production endangered the relationship between the duo;\u00a0\u00a0Garfunkel later stated in a 1990 interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Zollo\">Paul Zollo<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SongTalk\">SongTalk<\/a><\/em>\u00a0magazine: &#8220;Our way of working was for Paul to write while we recorded. So we&#8217;d be in the studio for the better part of two months working on the three or four songs that Paul had written, recording them, and when they were done, we&#8217;d knock off for a couple of months while Paul was working on the next group of three or four songs. Then we&#8217;d book time and be in the studio again for three or four months, recording those\u00a0. . . .
