They say necessity is the mother of invention. I think mom must have been a redneck. Some days I feel like a distant cousin.

I have blogged before about having two yellow feral cats that we feed on a daily basis. They have been around for a couple of years now, but it’s a constant struggle to make sure they are cared for and not the wildlife or whole neighborhood of marauding animals.

Lately it’s been a neighbor’s dog that visits several times a day to eat the catfood and drink all of the water placed out for the cats. Efforts to shoo off the dog have only lead the dog to picking up the bowl in his mouth and running off with it out into the yard or down the hill to a place he can enjoy what is left of it’s contents.

One of my brothers was over yesterday and after witnessing and hearing of our cat food tribulations, he rigged up a wooden pallet tied to the bottom of the back deck steps to prevent the dog from getting to the food. The cats can squeeze thru the slats of the pallet and eat their food and get to their water in peace.

It will have to do for now for the winter, and hopefully the dog will be deterred come spring. Otherwise, a better improvement will have to be made, such as a gate or door that can be open and closed. It’s beyond annoying to not be able to use the back deck unless one has particularly long legs and can straddle the makeshift device.

I’m going to have to think up a decent redneck middle name, because aren’t they all called by two names or something hyphenated like Billy Jo, Bobby Sue, Becky Lynn?

Where is Jeff Foxworthy when I need him?
