It is listed in the dictionary as an adverb, preposition, adjective, noun, or verb! \u00a0 There are over 30 definitions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I cannot claim total originality for what follows (I think variations of this have circulated before), but it sure is fun to explore for us word lovers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, it is easy to understand the word UP, meaning toward the sky or a higher position, but think about all the other ways we use this word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You wake UP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a meeting, topics come UP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Political candidates are UP for election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your smile can brighten UP a room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You line UP for tickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People speak UP or take UP a cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if a person is speaking too softly, we ask them to \u201cspeak UP!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the right skill, you can fix UP the old car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is UP to someone at work to write UP a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You call UP your friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please look UP your friends in your address book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, you can take UP with the wrong crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You work UP an appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At dinner time, you warm UP leftovers and then clean UP the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to lock UP the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A disaster strikes, and you must pick UP the pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By clicking a thumbs-UP, you can say you \u201clike\u201d something online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the rain, we say the sky is clearing UP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it has not rained for a while, we say it is drying UP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bad kid in class always stirs UP trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You think UP excuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone must open UP a store in the morning but remember to close it UP at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Pixar movie is called \u201cUp.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time to wrap this UP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time; but if you don\u2019t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[This post ran over a decade ago, and I thought I\u2019d bring it UP again.
